TRIOS 3 vs. TRIOS 6: Which 3Shape Scanner Fits Your Practice?

You have decided to go digital, or your first scanner is due for replacement, and 3Shape's lineup keeps bringing you back to two models: TRIOS 3, first released in 2015 and still sold today as TRIOS 3 Wired, and TRIOS 6, the wireless flagship launched in 2025. One costs about $10,500 more at list price. The question is whether your practice will use what the extra money buys.

This guide compares them on what matters to a practice that sends restorations to a lab. Performance figures from 3Shape are labeled as its claims.

Quick Answer

Choose TRIOS 3 if you mainly scan crowns, bridges, implant crowns and appliances for a lab, usually from one operatory, and want the lower cost (from $17,400 list). Choose TRIOS 6 (from $27,900) if you want one wireless scanner shared across rooms, single-use tips, calibration-free scanning and AI-assisted caries and wear visualization through Dx Plus. For single-unit restorative work, independent studies show both perform well, and technique matters more than the model.

How Do TRIOS 3 and TRIOS 6 Compare Side by Side?

Wired or Wireless: Which Works Better Day to Day?

TRIOS 3 connects to its pod with a 1 m USB-C cable; 3Shape says the current pod is 30% lighter and 10% smaller. A wired scanner never needs a battery swap, but it stays where its computer is.

TRIOS 6 runs on batteries: 3Shape lists up to 43 minutes of continuous scanning per battery and 60 minutes to reach 80% charge. With TRIOS Share, one wireless scanner can connect to scanning computers in different operatories. TRIOS Share works only with wireless TRIOS models, so TRIOS 3 Wired cannot use it.

Tips and infection control

TRIOS 3 relies on autoclavable tips and a calibration kit. TRIOS 6 is calibration-free, and its single-use Ready Tips are hygienic but not sterile, fit only TRIOS 5 and TRIOS 6, and are discarded after each patient. Both TRIOS 6 tip types come in one size.

Scan Quality: 3Shape's Claims vs. Independent Studies

3Shape claims TRIOS 6 combines white, fluorescent and near-infrared light in one scan ("hyperspectral") and delivers up to 110% higher scan resolution than the rest of the TRIOS portfolio. We found no clinical trial comparing the two scanners in patients, but recent in vitro studies are consistent.

Single preps: the scanner matters less than the prep

• In a 2026 study of 11 intraoral scanners on prepared teeth, TRIOS 6 tied with iTero Lumina for the lowest deviation with restoration mode selected: 24 ± 9 µm (Kalayci et al.).
• On molar crown preps, TRIOS 3 and TRIOS 5 differed by 1 µm (20.0 vs. 19.0 µm). Subgingival margins deviated more than supragingival ones (20.2 vs. 14.4 µm), and finish line design had a larger effect than scanner type (Gözen and Akın, 2026).

Full arch: newer helps, but TRIOS 6 is not the leader

• With inexperienced operators, TRIOS 4 was significantly more accurate than TRIOS 3 on full-arch scans (Schmalzl et al., 2023).
• On a six-implant edentulous model, TRIOS 6 averaged 84 µm of error in inter-implant distances, against 34 µm for iTero Lumina and 5 µm for extraoral photogrammetry (Mangano et al., 2025).
• Among 12 systems scanning an edentulous maxilla with eight multi-unit abutments, TRIOS 5 and TRIOS 6 fell in the lowest-performing group (Margossian et al., 2026).
• Across six intraoral scanners and one lab scanner, mean virtual marginal gaps were 15 to 30 µm for single crowns, but several TRIOS 6 complete-arch scans exceeded a 100 µm threshold (Daubner et al., 2026).

The practical reading: for crowns, short bridges and implant crowns, either scanner is capable. Current data do not support upgrading to TRIOS 6 for full-arch implant accuracy.

What About Caries Detection and Diagnostics?

This is the clearest functional difference. Dx Plus is AI-assisted software that flags surface caries, tooth wear, gingival recession and plaque, with severity color codes, and it works only with TRIOS 6 scans. TRIOS 6 also offers a near-infrared view for proximal caries; 3Shape notes it is not AI-detected and that availability depends on the region.

3Shape announced FDA 510(k) clearance for Dx on April 28, 2026, for use in adult patients. The clearance covers both Dx Plus and Dx Standard. Dx Standard tracks and measures changes between scans and works with all TRIOS models except TRIOS Core, so TRIOS 3 owners can use it too.

Dx Plus is a separate subscription, not part of TRIOS Care. 3Shape itself says the AI may not be 100% accurate and that false positives are expected, so treat it as an aid to your exam, not a replacement.

Which Computer, Cart and Software Come With Each?

Both scanners come with a 3Shape-approved, preconfigured computer running Windows 11 Pro with the TRIOS software installed. The setups differ:

• TRIOS 3: a pod with a laptop or desktop, or 3Shape's MOVE+ cart with a 15.6" touchscreen.
• TRIOS 6: a pod with a laptop or desktop, or the MOVE Pro cart with a built-in computer, an 18.5" touchscreen and an integrated battery that lasts up to 30 minutes between rooms. MOVE Pro works only with TRIOS 5 and TRIOS 6.

Software is largely shared: 3Shape Unite, the platform you send cases through, is free with a TRIOS, and both include patient engagement apps and Model Builder Express. TRIOS 6 adds TRIOS Share.

What Does Ownership Cost After Year One?

A new TRIOS comes with the first year of TRIOS Care. After that, you choose:

• TRIOS Care, from $219 per month: unlimited support, 5-year warranty coverage, accidental drop coverage, express replacement and 10 TB of cloud storage.
• TRIOS Only, $0 per month: software updates, support and repairs paid per case, and 10 GB of cloud storage.

On TRIOS 6, add the Dx Plus subscription if you use it, and the Ready Tips and sleeves you go through.

Is TRIOS 6 more accurate than TRIOS 3?

On single preps, in vitro studies show small differences between TRIOS generations; prep design and margin placement matter more. For full-arch implant scans, TRIOS 6 did not lead in 2025 and 2026 studies.

Can TRIOS 6 detect caries?

With Dx Plus, TRIOS 6 scans get AI-assisted detection of surface caries, plus tooth wear, recession and plaque. It is FDA cleared for adult patients as an aid to diagnosis. The proximal caries view is not AI-detected.

Do I need a subscription to use either scanner?

No. 3Shape Unite is free, and after the included first year you can choose TRIOS Care (from $219 per month) or TRIOS Only ($0 per month). Dx Plus on TRIOS 6 is a separate subscription.

Can I send TRIOS scans to Invisalign?

Not from the United States: 3Shape lists the US among the countries where TRIOS scans are not approved for Invisalign. Scans can still go to labs and other aligner providers through 3Shape Unite.
